5 Base Jumping Spots Around The World


Base jumping is one of the most dare-devil and adrenaline filled sports in the world. It is definitely not for the weak hearted. It is meant for the people who want to live by the edge. All it takes to engage in this sport, is to find a high enough place, and with a parachute in your backpack jump off it. It could be tall building, high cliffs, high bridge, and virtually any height that would give you enough time to safely deploy your parachute.

Empire State Building, New York City: The Empire State Building is not only one of the most beautiful buildings in New York, it is also 102 story tall. Although it is Base jumping off this building is restricted by law, there are still dare-devil jumper who have managed to jump off the building. It is definitely dangerous, since it’s located in a busy area and should anything go wrong with deployment of the parachute, you could jeopardize the lives of innocent people in the streets.

New River Gorge Bridge, West Virginia: The West Virginian Bridge which passes above the New River of Fayetteville provides massive 846 feet height for base jumpers. There are no legal restrictions against jumping off this bridge. Every October hundreds of base sports jumper come to this bridge to jump off it. The specific day for this big event is referred to as “Bridge Day”.

El Capitan, California: This is also one of the best spot for base jumpers. The El Captain is a 3,000 foot high rock found in Yosemite National Park in California. The pioneer jumpers, Brian Schubert and Michael Pelkey were the first people to base jump off this rock back in 1960s and set precedence for many jumpers after them.

Angel Falls, Venezuela: This is the world’s tallest waterfall, dropping from a height of 3,212 feet. Although it is located deep in the jungle, once you made it to the spot you are bound to be rewarded by a magnificent view of the waterfall. In addition to this, the base jumpers will have a real treat jumping off this waterfall. Jumpers could make the trip up the waterfall on foot or could choose to be airlifted using a chopper to the top of the waterfall. The view from the top of the waterfall is simply out-of-this world.

Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland: The Lauterbrunnen Valley overlooks the quintessential Swiss villages and pristine forests. It is also surrounded by beautiful mountains that provide the best spots for base jumpers, and there have been thousands of successful jumps which have been made. There are even base jumping schools located near the site. However, you should be aware that this site has the most recorded death resulting from base jumping event gone wrong.
