The Gold Coast is a favorite destination of backpackers in any season, and any backpacker is sure to quickly meet hoards of fellow travellers here. There are plenty of laid back, inexpensive destinations and activities on the Gold Coast that backpackers would love. Here is a list of five great things to do on the Gold Coast for backpackers.

Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise is far and away the most popular destination for backpackers to the Gold Coast, and there are numerous backpackers’ hostels in the area. This is also the best place to meet and socialise with other travellers. Other than the fantastic beaches and surf, there is a huge selection of bars, clubs and cafes. Cheap eats can be had in the backstreets of Surfers Paradise, where Asian eateries serve up cheap and tasty lunch sets.

Tweed Heads

Located just 5km from the Gold Coast Airport, Tweed Heads is a charming town on the coast that provides scenic views and a number of fun activities. Visit Point Danger, a distinctive headland at the boundary between New South Wales and Queensland. Whale watching is a possibility during the winter months. At Tropical Fruit World, witness the cultivation of tropical fruits and have a taste of some of the freshest and most delicious fruit you’ve ever seen. The area of Tweed Shire is also an excellent spot for some bushwalking, and with a guide you can also tackle the hiking trails that traverse the MacPherson Range.

Nobody visits the Gold Coast without spending time at its beautiful beaches. There are a huge variety of options on the Gold Coast, ranging from beaches with pounding surf such as Duranbah Beach, Snapper Rocks and Surfers Paradise, to beaches with gentle waters and ideal conditions for swimming such as Rainbow Bay, Currumbin, Hastings Point and Pottsville.

Theme Parks

The heart-stopping rollercoasters and goofy mascots at the numerous theme parks are a big reason visitors love the Gold Coast.  The three most well known theme parks are Dreamworld, Seaworld and Warner Bros Movie World. Wet ‘n’ Wild and Whitewater World will take you on wild rides, but remember to bring your bathing suit. If you’re set on visiting at least two, getting a combo ticket will save you some money.

The Hinterland

The Hinterland of the Gold Coast is a beautiful area full of farms, wineries and the most stunning mountains, rivers and waterfalls. Mount Tamborine is a quaint little town that is largely supported by its own cottage industry and home to restaurants, wineries and many other tiny shops.

With so much to do, backpackers on the Gold Coast are spoiled for choice. Whether you’d like to explore the great outdoors, get your adrenaline pumping on thrilling roller coaster rides or just surf all day long, you are sure to have the time of your life.
