For anglers who dream of a deep sea fishing vacation finding a charter with an accommodations package is a dream come true. Fishing with Captain Rich on the Southbound, offers just such a dream vacation.
Anglers who fish aboard the Southbound for a full plus a half day charter get 3 nights accommodation in a charming fishing cottage just a couple of blocks from Duval Street. Three full days gets you six nights in the cottage. [More details on the accommodations.]
The Southbound is a custom 40 ft. fiberglass sport fisherman charterboat built in Key West specifically for fishing the waters off Key West.
The Southbound is fitted to provide a deep sea saltwater fishing experience to anglers of all ages and ability and to target all the species you expect to find in Key West – from marlin and sailfish to dolphin, snapper, wahoo, all types of mackerel and grouper. Even sharks!
It’s all about having the right tackle for different anglers and the various conditions you encounter on the Southernmost waters. On the SOUTHBOUND you’ll find everything from 80 lb. trolling rods to 15 lb. spinning reels, and the “preferred tackle” while trolling is 30-lb. test line.
“Thirty pound test has been has proven to be a great all around line size,” says Captain Rich. “It’s not too small for the big fish and still light enough to allow smaller fish to put up a great fight.”
The captain has successfully landed sailfish, wahoo, dolphin, tuna, grouper and even white and blue marlin with 30-lb. tackle. More experienced anglers often prefer 15 and 20 lb. spinning tackle – and the Southbound has it, of course.
When you fish aboard the Southbound, your trophies get posted on the web – Captain Rich publishes his catch of the day for every charter, so you can always see what’s biting in Key West and being landed aboard the Southbound.
Three sailfish were released April 14th – and another one two days earlier. Sailfish are on!
No photos on April 11th! It was “our day in the barrel,” the captain writes. “Lost a Sailfish, Lost a hammerhead shark, Lost a Bonito and Lost a Cobia. We did catch a dolphin for dinner!” A few days earlier, though, they caught this hammerhead.

Back at the cottage, the anglers relax outdoors enjoy the glorious Key West weather and get ready for an evening out on the town. The cottage is close enough to Duval to walk to everything – from great restaurants, world famous watering holes like Sloppy Joes, and the Green Parrot. You can cook your own catch on the outdoor grill, or captain Rich sends his angelrs up to Camille’s just a block away. Mention Captain Rich and send a bottle of beer to the chef and expect some special treatment! Captain Rich also recommends the Salsa Loca for those who love Mexcian! Yes, the owner is a friend, but it’s also the best and most authentic Mexican food in town.
The cottage sleeps 4 – a queen sized bed in the bedroom and a full double futon in the living room – and has all the amenities – including A/C – you need to complete your Key West fishing vacation adventure!
