Holidays In St Ives

St Ives is an incredibly pretty seaside resort, situated in Cornwall, in the southwest of the United Kingdom.  With its picturesque cobbled streets and whitewashed fishing cottages, it is not difficult to see why this traditional harbour town is the most popular Cornish holiday destination.

THE RAILWAY ARRIVES

Prior to the opening of a new railway line in 1877, to enable access by Great Western Railways trains, St Ives has been a fairly isolated location, accessed primarily by sea and relied heavily on its successful fishing port for many generations.

With the opening of this new branch line however, everything began to change. The new line improved accessibility to the town, making it convenient for visitors to reach and word soon spread about this stunning location. In no time at all, St Ives had established itself as a desirable holiday resort and this popularity has remained throughout the years.

A large percentage of the town was actually constructed towards the end of the 19th century as a result of its growing popularity and the railway line itself gradually became a tourist attraction in its own right due to the jaw dropping scenes enjoyed by passengers whilst travelling alongside the areas stunning cliffs and bays.

FISHING

Whilst fishing is no longer relied on in the area as a source of income, the tradition is certainly still alive and local fisherman bring in a fresh catch daily to supply the towns restaurants and eateries with the best quality fish and seafood.

This part of the West Country is well known for fresh fish including Snapper and Bass and for lovers of seafood, in addition to the wonderful Crab, Scallops and Oyster, fresh Lobster is a favourite local speciality.

The town boasts restaurants catering for all tastes so whether you are on the hunt for the best Cornish pasty you have ever tasted or a fine dining experience, you will not be disappointed.

A COMFORTABLE CLIMATE

Frosts are quite unusual in this part of the UK thanks to Cornwall’s extremely mild, sub tropical climate that benefits year round from warm air coming in from the Gulf Stream. This makes St Ives a great option for an off peak break at any time of the year. Cornwall enjoys some of the warmest summers and mildest winters in the UK with above average sunshine all year round.

The attractive local climate has allowed residents to successfully grow semi tropical plants and shrubs that would not thrive in other parts of the country, adding to the town’s vibrancy and appeal.

BEACHES

You will find a great choice of award winning, blue flag beaches, all of which have convenient facilities nearby. St Ives itself has four great beaches to choose from; Porthmeor, Porthgwidden, Porthminster and Harbour beach, all offering their own distinctive charm and appeal on the rugged Celtic coastline.

Porthmeor is the most popular choice for surfers and there are excellent surf schools and lifeguards available along with all of the usual conveniences you would expect. Porthgwidden and Porthminster beaches are both excellent choices for families as they offer more shelter and calmer sea conditions.

All of the beaches are immaculately clean with crystal clear waters and golden sands. The Harbour beach is also an incredibly popular sheltered beach with great facilities and access as well as the opportunity to see the fishermen bringing their catch in to the shore.

ART & ST IVES

St Ives is a well-known hotspot for artists and this is evident in the numerous galleries and studios to be found in the area. The most famous of all the galleries in the area is of course the Tate St Ives which exhibits a combination of both local and national art. You can find this famous gallery directly above the beach at Porthmeor.

In addition to the local beaches, art galleries and numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants you will find plenty to do in and around St Ives. There are regular boat trips to enable you to explore the beautiful bays and see more of the areas fascinating wildlife and flora, along with fantastic walking opportunities, shopping, a great selection of water sports, theatre and regular open air events during the summer months.
